The club was formed in 2002 when long time friends, Mark Blyth, Doug McLean and James Berry became disillusioned with the long Sunday drives to Merseyside to coach and play with the Nighthawks. On one of their weekly trips along the M62, they decided that they would have one last attempt to establish a football club in Doncaster.
Twelve years later, the Mustangs are still here and going from strength to strength. The original idea for the team colours was Gold Helmets, Navy shirts & Gold Pants. But at that time, two of the other teams in the Mustangs first ever division wore blue too, so the fairly ’unique’ colour Green (only a couple of other teams in the whole league used it) was chosen.
In only their second season in existence, they lifted the BAFL Division 2 title after going undefeated throughout the season (their only blip was a 13-13 tie with Edinburgh in the opening game of the season) which culmlnated in a comfortable 32-13 bowl garne win against Chiltern Cheetahs at the Don Valley Stadium in Sheffield. The Mustangs have made 5 appearances in the playoffs in their 12 year history (2004, 2005, 2009, 2011 & 2013) with their only post season wins coming in 2004, the Division 2 championship season.
The early seasons were played at Doncaster RUFC in Armthorpe and one season at East Retford RUFC before moving to the newly opened Keepmoat Stadium (DN4 5JW) in 2007. in 2017 the Mustangs moved to their new home at Wheatley Hills RUFC (DN5 8PT) where games & practices are all in one location.
